Noel Gallagher told a very amusing story about getting 'Guess who's dead?' calls from his Irish Mammy

“Do you remember Gerard?” “No, Mam.”

IF THERE’S ONE things Irish Mams love, it’s challenging their children to a game of Guess Who’s Dead?

“Guess who died?” she says. “I don’t know, who?” you reply. “Remember that man up in number seven?” And so begins a neverending back-and-forth.

Over the weekend, Noel Gallagher spoke to Absolute Radio to mark his 50th birthday (!) and told some highly amusing anecdotes about his mother Peggy, who originally hails from Co. Mayo.

“My Mum is obsessed with people dying,” he told the station. “She’ll call me up and she’ll say, ‘Wait till I tell ya.’”

He then proceeded to do a fairly dead on impersonation of a Mam laying the groundwork for a game of Guess Who’s Dead?

Do you know Gerard who used to live next door? You do. He went out with Janine. She works in the Spar. Didn’t she have a f**king little white dog? Jesus, wasn’t he called Bimbo and he used to run amok in the garden?

Oh yeah, Gerard.

Didn’t he die.

You can take the Mam out of Ireland, but you can never take the Irish obsession with death out of the Mam.

Elsewhere in the interview, Noel discussed the possibility of taking his lovely Mam to the forthcoming U2 gig in Croke Park, where he is playing support.

I don’t know where that story’s come from. I think she might have put that out there hoping she’ll get a ticket. As I said to her, ‘It’s sold out, Mum.’ So I’ll see if Bono can help me out.

Ah Noel. Don’t be like that.
